My Journey to Prioritising Well-Being

Growing up in England, weekends often meant nights out on Fridays and Saturdays, followed by days of recovery that stretched well into the next week. As I got older, I realized that this routine was neither sustainable, productive, nor healthy. It was a lifestyle that left me feeling drained and unfulfilled. Recognizing the need for change, I began a journey to prioritize self-care and well-being.

Beginning a new journey in anything can be daunting, but taking one small step at a time and implementing changes gradually can have a profound impact in the longer term. One of the first significant changes I made was reducing my alcohol intake. I found that cutting back on drinking not only improved my physical health but also had a positive impact on my mental clarity and overall happiness. This shift allowed me to reclaim my weekends for more fulfilling activities, such as spending quality time with friends and loved ones, engaging in outdoor activities, and truly enjoying life.

In addition to cutting back on alcohol, I made a conscious effort to incorporate regular exercise into my routine. Making time for the gym and staying active became non-negotiable parts of my schedule. Whether it's lifting weights, running, or simply taking long walks in nature, physical activity has been instrumental in boosting my mood and energy levels.

Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has been another key element of my self-care journey. There's something incredibly rejuvenating about being in the fresh air, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It helps me reset and find balance, enhancing both my mental and physical well-being.

Reading has also become a vital part of my relaxation routine, especially before bed. I discovered that reading books, as opposed to scrolling through my phone or watching TV, significantly improved the quality of my sleep. It serves as a form of meditation, allowing me to unwind and prepare for a restful night's sleep. The time spent away from screens has been beneficial for my mental health and overall relaxation.

In my quest for better sleep and overall health, I also reduced my caffeine intake. Cutting back on caffeine, especially in the afternoons and evenings, has made a noticeable difference in my sleep quality. Alongside maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, I ensure that I don't eat a couple of hours before bed.
